INTRA Research Project: Valleys of the Simorgh. A transhistorical Quest for Equality and Democracy

For more then a year, people in Iran have been protesting for regime change, democracy, freedom, equality and human rights. This protest movement, initially started by women and girls at the risk of their lives, expanded into a feminist-intersectional revolution. People from different marginalised groups (ethnic, LGBTQI+, disabled) joined together and collectively try to bring democracy and equality to Iran. This collective singular, whose strength and insistence results from a union of different, but equal actors, has a metaphoric model in the tale Conference of the Birds, written by Farid Al-Din Attar 800 years ago.

In a transhistorical perspective, the project aims to highlight the significance of this narrative for today and to explore the role of art and literature in the struggle for equality and human rights. At the same time, it raises the question of how this narrative was able to survive for so long, how it travelled and influenced thinking and the arts outside of Iran.

In four events, we would like to retrace the valleys of Attar’s tale and walk through them together with the students of the Angewandte as well as with a public audience to learn from this journey. The topicality of the Conference of the Birds is to be elaborated together with students and a non-academic audience with reference to the current political struggles for human rights, in order to subsequently also highlight the potential of the arts within a political framework.

We would like to trace the symbolic and iconic level of this tale in an inter- and transdisciplinary manner. When did this tale come into being? What did it respond to? How and why was it translated? What does it say about past and present notions of political participation? Why is diversity and intersectionality so important for the formation of societies? What practices help to establish equality rights? What is the role of the collective?

Transculturally, a human striving for freedom and equality becomes articulated here, illustrating the power of the arts to bridge temporal and spatial distances and stimulate thoughts.

The seminar "A transhistorical journey. Historical revisions in contemporary art (summer term 2024) – and workshops with the invited guests enable students to engage with different genres and artistic forms in terms of content and theory.

The Conference of the Birds

In 1177, Persian cleric and poet Farid Al-Din Attar wrote his Conference of the Birds. This narrative tells of the long and arduous journey of a large group of birds in search for the rightful sovereign. On their quest they pass through various valleys which become places of trial and experience for them and in which they lose a multitude of their group members one after another. After the 7th valley, only 30 birds remain, who, due to the challenges they have mastered and the experiences they have gained, finally realize that their quest has come to an end. The longed-for Simorgh as their ruler, to whom they want to be subject, has become in fact themselves (si = 30, morgh = birds).

This narrative illustrates the path of a spiritual journey towards redemption/enlightenment, a goal that is already inherent in us and which must first be fathomed. The path to this can be accomplished through Sufism. But this tale tells much more than this and opens up a wide range of connections and associations. What we want to do in our project is to trace these and make their relevance to the challenges of our present a topic.

So why is the Conference of the Birds still such a fascinating source of inspiration and contemplation today?

Seit mehr als einem Jahr protestieren Menschen im Iran für einen Regimewechsel, Demokratie, Freiheit, Gleichheit und Menschenrechte. Diese Revolutionsbestrebung, die zunächst von Frauen und Mädchen unter Einsatz ihres Lebens begonnen wurde, hat sich zu einer feministisch-intersektionellen Bewegung ausgeweitet. Menschen aus verschiedenen Gruppierungen (ethnische Gruppen, LGBTQI+, Beeinträchtigte) schlossen sich zusammen und versuchen gemeinsam, Demokratie und Gleichheit in den Iran zu bringen. Dieses kollektive Subjekt, dessen Stärke und Beharrlichkeit aus einer intersektionalen Verbindung resultiert, hat ein metaphorisches Vorbild in der Erzählung Konferenz der Vögel, die vor 800 Jahren von Farid Al-Din Attar verfasst wurde. 

In einer transhistorischen Perspektive zielt das Projekt darauf ab, die Bedeutung dieser Erzählung für die heutige Zeit herauszuarbeiten und die Rolle von Kunst und Literatur im Kampf für Gleichheit und Demokratie zu untersuchen. Gleichzeitig wirft es die Frage auf, wie diese Erzählung so lange überleben konnte und wie sie das Denken und die Kunst auch außerhalb Irans beeinflusst hat.

In vier Abendveranstaltungen möchten wir die Täler aus der Erzählung gemeinsam mit den Studierenden der Angewandten sowie mit einem außeruniversitären Publikum durchwandern und von dieser Reise lernen. Die Aktualität der Konferenz der Vögel soll in Bezug auf die aktuellen politischen Kämpfe um Gleichheit, Freiheit und Menschenrechte herausgearbeitet werden, um anschließend auch das Potential der Künste im politischen Rahmen zu beleuchten.

Wir möchten die symbolische und ikonische Ebene der Konferenz der Vögel inter- und transdisziplinär nachzeichnen. Wann ist diese Erzählung entstanden? Worauf hat sie reagiert? Wie und warum wurde sie übersetzt? Was sagt sie über vergangene und gegenwärtige Vorstellungen von politischer Partizipation aus? Warum sind Gleichheit und Diversität so wichtig für die Gestaltung von Gesellschaften? Welche Praktiken helfen, Gleichheitsrechte zu etablieren? Was ist die Rolle des Kollektivs?

Transkulturell wird hier ein menschliches Streben nach Freiheit und Gleichheit artikuliert, das die Kraft der Künste verdeutlicht, zeitliche und räumliche Distanzen zu überbrücken und zum Nachdenken anzuregen.

Die Lehrveranstaltung "Eine transhistorische Reise. Historische Revisionen in der Gegenwartskunst (Sommersemester 2024) – und Workshops mit den eingeladenen Gästen ermöglichen den Studierenden eine inhaltliche und theoretische Auseinandersetzung mit unterschiedlichen Genres und künstlerischen Formen.

Die Konferenz der Vögel

Um das Jahr 1177 schrieb der persische Kleriker und Dichter Farid Al-Din Attar Die Konferenz der Vögel. Diese Erzählung berichtet von der langen und beschwerlichen Reise einer großen Gruppe von Vögeln auf der Suche nach dem rechtmäßigen Herrscher. Auf ihrer Suche durchqueren sie verschiedene Täler, die für sie zu Orten der Prüfung und Erfahrung werden und in denen sie nach und nach eine Vielzahl ihrer Gruppenmitglieder verlieren. Nach dem 7. Tal bleiben nur noch 30 Vögel übrig, die aufgrund der gemeisterten Herausforderungen und der gesammelten Erfahrungen schließlich erkennen, dass ihre Suche ein Ende gefunden hat: Der ersehnte Simorgh als rechtmäßiger Herrscher, dem sie sich unterwerfen möchten, ist in Wirklichkeit bereits in ihnen inhärent. Sie selbst sind der Simorgh (si = 30, morgh = Vögel).

Diese Erzählung veranschaulicht den Weg einer spirituellen Reise zur Erlösung/Erleuchtung, ein Ziel, das bereits in uns angelegt ist, jedoch erst ergründet werden muss. Der Weg dorthin kann durch den Sufismus beschritten werden. Aber diese Geschichte erzählt viel mehr als das und eröffnet ein breites Spektrum an Verbindungen und Assoziationen. Diesen wollen wir in unserem Projekt nachspüren und ihre Relevanz für die Herausforderungen unserer Gegenwart zum Thema machen.

Warum also ist die Konferenz der Vögel auch heute noch eine so faszinierende Quelle der Inspiration und Kontemplation?
